Area Graduates Receive Scholarships, Teachers Honored

June 3, 2009

Mayflower Wollam Insurance Group presented four local graduates each with $500 scholarships in the months of May and June for essays honoring former teachers.  All recipients are graduates of the class of 2009 and will be attending Youngstown State University.  Those awarded scholarships receive a certificate stating their award.  The teacher honored in the essay receives a certificate for their dedication to teaching.  Each school was given a plaque with 18 engravable plates for future scholarship recipients and acknowledged teachers.

Miss Shelby A. Nelson of Maplewood High School, received her scholarship on May 20, 2009 for her essay honoring former teacher Mrs. Amy Mancini.  In her essay, Nelson stated, "My third grade teacher, Mrs. Mancini, was the biggest factor in my educational development because through her belief in me I came to realize that how well I did in school would have an affect on me throughout the rest of my life."

On May 27, 2009, Miss Lillian Justice of Jackson Milton High School was awarded the scholarship after honoring Mr. George Tomaino.  "He [Tomaino] has taught me what he means to truly love and be passionate about what you do in life.  He has put us before himself, and I cannot put into words the gratitude and appreciation I have for him and everything he does for the students at Jackson-Milton," Justice stated in her piece.

Mr. Adam Hess of Mineral Ridge High School wrote his essay honoring Mr. Sam Reigle.  He received his scholarship May 28, 2009.  In his essay, Hess said the following, "His (Reigle) hard work and dedication to his job, his character and integrity and his willingness to adapt to people and their needs make him an overall great guy far and above the "average joe"(...)Mr. Reigle is and forever will be the most influential teacher in my learning career as a student in both high school and college."

The Lakeview High School recipient was Mr. Justin T. Sprague.  He received his scholarship on May 29, 2009 for his essay honoring former teacher Mr. Lawrence Herrholtz.  Sprague said "… he (Herrholtz) teaches with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm.  He always presented facts in a way that kept the class wanting to know more."

The Mayflower Wollam Insurance Group Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from the Jackson-Milton, Lakeview, Maplewood, and Weathersfield School Districts planning to attend Youngstown State University in pursuit of a Bachelors degree.  The recipient is determined through an essay written by the student identifying a teacher within the school district who has had a significant impact on the student’s educational development.  The scholarship aims to recognize outstanding teachers within the community through the words of their past students.
